'Caribbean Currents' Project
In 2005 Cloth of Gold renewed their partnership with the Horniman Museum completing a long term London-wide community project linked to the launch of the museum's important temporary exhibition 'Amazon to Caribbean'. Artists worked with a wide range of different Caribbean community groups in partnership with four local museums in Greater London:
The Cuming Museum in Southwark; Grange Museum in Brent; Wandsworth Museum; and the Newham Heritage Centre. photos of outcomes here
Participants used pre-Columbian artefacts which feature in the Horniman's exhibition and any linking objects from the local museums' collections to stimulate a creative exploration of Caribbean identity both in the past and in their own present experience. The outcomes of the project were presented in the local museums before being amassed in a 'Caribbean Currents Project' exhibition at the Horniman Museum. This exhibition ran alongide the 'Amazon to Caribbean' exhibition from October 2005 to April 23rd, 2006. Cloth of Gold artists also designed and made the large hammock and designed the centre piece in the main exhibition which runs until October 2006.
A project website was also developed on behalf of the Horniman Museum and is online at www.caribbean-currents.co.uk. The project was funded by the London Hub and managed by The Horniman Museum.
